Planning your time at our Postgraduate Open Day
Are you thinking about progressing to postgraduate study? Whether you’re looking for a Masters or PhD, our Postgraduate Open Day will tell you all you need to know about studying at Durham University. Read on to find out how to best plan your day!
Arriving in Durham…
We know that arriving in a new city for the first time can be confusing, so we are providing a free shuttle bus for all open day attendees to get to and from our main tours and talks. Our taxi service will operate from the Durham Train Station to the Teaching and Learning Centre and between the Teaching and Learning Centre and Ustinov College, making travelling between our sites quick and easy. Durham is also a very walkable city for those who want to enjoy the beautiful sights of the River Wear, historic buildings and beautiful countryside on foot!
While Durham does have Park and Ride car parks, we encourage our visitors to use public transport. Parking in Durham city and at nearby Park and Ride car parks is limited and we are unable to provide University parking unless you have access needs.
Choosing your Tours and Talks…
Are you new to Durham? No problem! We are running a City and Campus tour between 10-11am from the Teaching and Learning Centre so you can get to know the city. We are also showcasing our only Postgraduate-only college with our Ustinov College tour, where you can get familiar with the Graduate Common Room (GCR) and its facilities and hear all about what college life offers whether you live-in or out.
In the Teaching and Learning Centre, we have lots of helpful talks – from advice on applying to Durham to a Q&A with students, we’ve got it covered! After that, you may want to peruse your department and to find out more about your specific course and possibly have a chance to speak to a student ambassador. These sessions vary in location or type, so make sure to check out our Open Day Guide to find out what your department offers.
Our Postgraduate Open Day is here for you to find out exactly what you want to, so you do not have to attend every session. Book onto the sessions you will find most interesting and helpful, and you will be able to view those on your booking page.
Information Fair and Colleges Hub…
Postgraduate study is not just about your course, it’s also about the community you find and the range of activities and support you can access outside of your degree. Why not drop into the Information Fair and Colleges Hub in the Teaching and Learning Centre between 13:30-15:00? Talk to some of our exhibitors and pick up some freebies along the way!
From sports and societies to wellbeing and careers services, our Information Fair has exhibitors for all you need to know about student life and resources. Stop and have a chat with any stall that catches your eye.
Ustinov is not the only college that accepts postgraduates. At our Colleges Hub you can find out more about Durham’s 17 colleges and chat to representatives about college life. Make sure to pick up a Postgraduate College Guide when you’re there!
Take a Break…
Durham wouldn’t be Durham without a good café! Not only does the city centre have a collection of cosy cafes and restaurants, Durham University Catering outlets also offer a range of tasty variety of hot and cold food, snacks and drinks to keep you fuelled for your next Talk, Tour or Exhibition! Make sure to check out what we have on offer for the Open Day here and keep refreshed!
