Tips for applying for a Chevening Scholarship from a Chevening assessor

Kulwinder Maude

I am Kulwinder Maude, Assistant Professor (Primary English) at the Centre for Teacher Education at Durham University and a senior fellow of the Higher education Academy, with more than twelve years of experience in the UK higher education system. I have worked with Chevening Scholarships for the past few years as an Academic Assessor where I gained valuable insights into the international student world and their hopes for the future; how they want to use their higher education experiences in the UK to improve their world. Below, I share some of my tips and advice for Chevening Scholarship applicants.

How long have you assessed Chevening Scholarship applications?

I started assessing Chevening applications in 2020 during the Covid 19 pandemic. Professionally, I have always been keen to sharpen my evaluative skills, and I enjoy delving into the diverse ways applicants approach challenges and innovate accordingly. It is most definitely a constant learning process, which has been enriching my academic journey for the past few years.

What do you feel is your contribution to assessing Chevening Scholarship applications as an Ethnic Minority academic in the UK Higher Education system?

As an ethnic minority academic assessor in the UK, my role in evaluating Chevening Scholarship applications offers a profoundly enriching experience. Chevening, a prestigious UK government funded programme, awards scholarships to exceptional individuals from across the Commonwealth. This process of assessing applications is more than just a professional duty for me; it’s a privilege that brings countless rewards, both personally and professionally.

One of the most significant aspects of this role is the opportunity to engage with a diverse array of applicants. These candidates hail from various Commonwealth countries, each bringing unique backgrounds, perspectives, and aspirations. I feel that reading their applications is like opening a window to the world, where I get a glimpse into different cultures, societal challenges, and remarkable stories of resilience and ambition around the world.

For me, as an ethnic minority assessor, this diversity resonates deeply. There’s an intrinsic connection and empathy that comes from understanding the nuances of living a life of a minority, facing systemic challenges, and striving to create positive change. This shared understanding makes the evaluation process more insightful and meaningful for me. It’s not just about assessing qualifications or achievements; it’s about recognising the journey and the context behind each application.

Chevening values unique perspectives and experiences, so let your individuality shine through.

Moreover, assessing these applications reinforces the importance of representation and inclusion. It’s heartening to see applicants from diverse backgrounds striving for excellence and envisioning themselves as future leaders. This aligns with my own experiences and aspirations as an ethnic minority academic. It’s a reminder that talent and potential are universal, and that opportunities like Chevening can help bridge the gap between aspiration and achievement, regardless of one’s background.

The stories of these applicants are often inspiring and humbling. Many have overcome significant obstacles to pursue their education and career goals. Their passion for making a difference in their communities and beyond is palpable. As an assessor, it’s incredibly fulfilling to support and empower such individuals. It’s a chance to contribute to a larger mission of fostering global leaders who can drive positive change.

Additionally, this role offers a unique learning experience. Each application is a testament to the diverse ways in which people approach challenges, innovate, and seek solutions. This diversity of thought and experience broadens my own perspective and understanding. It’s an ongoing education that enriches my own academic and professional journey. Hence, the reason I return to assess the applications year after year.

Chevening is not just about academic excellence; it’s about finding individuals with the drive and capability to lead and influence.

The Chevening programme also underscores the value of international collaboration. Assessing applications from across the Commonwealth highlights the interconnectedness of our world and the shared challenges we face. It’s a reminder that fostering global networks and partnerships is essential in addressing these challenges. The opportunity to contribute to this global dialogue is immensely rewarding.

Furthermore, being part of the Chevening assessment process aligns with my personal and professional commitment to equity and social justice. It’s a platform to advocate for deserving individuals who may not have had the same opportunities but have demonstrated exceptional potential. It’s about recognising and supporting future leaders who will champion these values in their respective fields and communities.

In short, it’s a unique intersection of personal passion, professional responsibility, and global impact. Each application assessed is a step towards fostering a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable world. It’s a privilege to be part of a process that empowers future leaders from across the Commonwealth, celebrating their achievements and supporting their aspirations. I believe that the joy of this role lies in the ability to make a difference, one application at a time.

What advice would you give to prospective Chevening Scholarship applicants?

As an experienced assessor in the UK higher education system, my advice to prospective Chevening applicants is comprehensive:

  • First and foremost, be authentic. Chevening values unique perspectives and experiences, so let your individuality shine through. Share your journey candidly, highlighting the challenges you’ve faced and the achievements you’ve accomplished. Your story is your strength. Focus on both your success as well as your failures and what you have learnt along the way.
  • Clear vision is crucial. Chevening seeks future leaders who will make substantial contributions to their home countries. Clearly articulate your career goals and how the scholarship will help you achieve them. Explain the impact you intend to make and how your studies in the UK will equip you to address specific challenges in your community or country.
  • Exhibit your leadership potential. Chevening is not just about academic excellence; it’s about finding individuals with the drive and capability to lead and influence. Provide concrete examples of your leadership roles, initiatives you’ve spearheaded, or projects you’ve been part of. Demonstrate how these experiences have prepared you for future leadership.
  • Emphasise your commitment to networking and collaboration. Chevening is about building a global network of future leaders. Showcase your ability to engage with diverse groups and foster meaningful connections. Highlight any international experiences or cross-cultural engagements that reflect your adaptability and openness.
  • Ensure your application is well-rounded. Academic achievements are important, but so are your extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and professional experiences. Provide a holistic view of who you are and what you bring to the table.
  • Pay attention to detail. A well-written, error-free application reflects your dedication and seriousness about the scholarship. Proofread thoroughly and seek feedback from mentors or peers. Ensure every section of your application is coherent and compelling.
  • Lastly, stay confident but humble. The competition is fierce but believe in your capabilities and the value you bring. With dedication and a well-prepared application, you can make a compelling case for why you deserve the Chevening Scholarship. Good luck!
